Why does nature favour synchronization?
By Hiroshi Ito

What comes to mind when you hear “synchronization”? Line dancing? An orchestra? A military step? Surprisingly, synchronization is also a common phenomenon in nature. Without any formal training or a conductor, groups of organisms or even substances can somehow move in sync. Let’s take a glance at the world of synchronization.

Bio
Hiroshi Ito is an Associate Professor at Faculty of Design, Kyushu University. He was afraid of bugs and fascinated by robot anime in his childhood. He majored in mechanical engineering at a university but found himself frustrated by stupid robots and artificial intelligence, which led him to switch to biology. He majored in biology in PhD course and became crazy about biological clocks—a fascination that continues to this day.

Unbelievable! Inside Giants and WBC
By Tomoo Ota

I have been involved in sports for a long time, but there was a time when I left the newspaper business to work as a publicist for Yomiuri Giants and the second World Baseball Classic in 2009-2010. There, I found a world that was different from the norm. Let me tell you about the inside story of the Giants and the WBC from a newspaper reporter’s perspective.

Bio
I have been covering sports since the 1990s. I have covered over 2,000 baseball games in total. I think I have spent about half a year at the Tokyo Dome, the home stadium of the Giants, in total. From 1999 to 2002, I was a US correspondent, covering the four major professional sports in North America, mainly Major League Baseball, and golf. I also witnessed the September 11 disaster in 2001 and had no choice but to cover it.
